The Co-operative Insurance Society is to offer its five million policyholders a say in developing the SRI policy applied to its £20billion ($36bn) investment portfolio.

CIS will begin the process this year by sending out a questionnaire that encourages customers to express their views on corporate governance and social, ethical and environmental issues, including climate change and involvement in countries with oppressive regimes.

CIS believes as many as 500,000 will respond, and will finalize the policy early next year.
