Starbucks has dramatically increased the amount of fair trade-certified coffee it uses. The US-based company’s latest report shows it used 499,000kg in 2002, compared with 296,000kg in 2001. It also more than doubled its purchases of environment-friendlier shade-grown coffee, while organic coffee used rose 94 per cent to 771,000kg. Starbucks has over 700 shops in 33 countries.
