Fifteen mining firms have agreed not to explore or mine in any of the 754 United Nations World Heritage sites. The companies, all members of the International Council on Mining and Metals, include Alcoa, AngloGold, BHP Billiton, Pasminco, Placer Dome and Rio Tinto. In a separate move, Shell has made a similar pledge.
