Four major oil and gas companies have agreed to consider biodiversity when they select new development sites and decommission old ones.
BP, ChevronTexaco, Shell International and Statoil have made the deal with the US-based Energy and Biodiversity Initiative, which has brought them together with five conservation bodies, including Conservation International.
The companies will pilot the initiative’s conservation guidelines for oil and gas projects.
