The UK transport services group Go-Ahead has published its first combined social and environmental report.

The 64-page document, which is verified by the Smart Company consultancy, features data on the bus and rail group’s community and social performance.

Go-Ahead, which employs 17,000 people, has set up ‘stakeholder boards’ of customers and local community representatives for its Oxford Bus Company and South Central Trains subsidiaries – and plans to create similar consultative groups in other parts of the group.

The group is to investigate incentives for its companies and staff to improve environmental performance and will formalize a social policy.

It has managed to stabilize carbon dioxide emissions per passenger journey, the report says. However, an independent review statement by David MacDonald, director of the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit at Oxford University, says that too many of its goals are couched in terms of ‘improve’ or ‘continue to develop’ instead of being quantified.
