The BBC has launched its first environment report with a warning that it ‘contains more anecdotes than measured impacts’.

The web-based report, Environment Matters, is intended as a first step towards the BBC taking greater account of corporate social responsibility.

The report focuses on five areas of environmental impact: waste management, utilities, transport, supply chain and property.

The BBC promises that future reports will ‘contain a lot more environmental data and targets’ and that it will conduct an environmental risk analysis of suppliers and products this year. There will also be more information on community involvement.

The BBC adds that it will update its purchasing policy to take greater account of environmental objectives, develop assessment criteria that will enable it to seek out environmentally active suppliers, and introduce an ‘awareness programme’ on environmental issues for all BBC staff who buy goods for the corporation.
