Italian oil and gas company Eni has produced an inventory of its social responsibility projects around the world.

In two documents on community relations and social development, Eni, which operates in more than 70 countries and employs 70,000 people, outlines dozens of initiatives it has been supporting over the past five years.

These include Eni’s involvement as the main corporate partner in the World Health Organization’s Roll Back Malaria initiative, launched in 1998, which aims to halve the number of malaria cases in the world by 2010.

Eni has provided financial support of £525,000 ($750,000) to the project, but has also taken on the role of mobilizing other companies to provide further contributions in cash or in kind.

The two documents also cover Eni’s work in the Congo, where the company has rebuilt the Talangai hospital near Brazzaville and refurbished a number of public buildings damaged during the recent civil war. Other initiatives include a project in Azerbaijan to provide homes and jobs for 400 refugee families.

In 2000, Eni spent £13million on community involvement.
