Four utilities companies have been chosen on a shortlist of finalists for the 2000 UK Environmental Reporting Awards.

Anglian Water, Scottish Power, United Utilities and Wessex Water have been named on the 13-strong list, from which an overall winner will be announced in February or March next year. United Utilities won the title last year (EP10, 1999).

Other finalist companies for the 2000 awards, which are organised by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and are now in their tenth year, are Biffa (waste management), Bovince (printing), British Airports Authority, Carillion (construction), Co-operative Bank, Pittards (leather manufacturers), Shell, Wastebusters (consultancy) and Windsor & Maidenhead council.

Roger Adams, head of technical services at ACCA, said the standard of reports entered this year was ‘higher than ever’, with a record number of companies submitting for the first time and ‘an increase in environmental reports being integrated into annual reports, which shows the importance now being attached to this issue.’

A new ‘Social Reporting Service’ has been launched by the Industrial Society.

The consultancy service, which offers advice to companies on how to produce a social report from the early planning stages through to auditing, publication and then post-publication feedback, was unveiled at the Confederation of British Industry’s annual conference last month.

The new service will be provided through the society’s surveys and diagnostic consultancy unit.
