Microsoft has announced ambitious plans to become carbon neutral in a year, having cut its emissions by 30% per unit of revenue from 2007 levels through efficiencies and increased renewable energy use. On 1 July, the computer giant introduced an internal carbon fee, a first for the IT industry, to incentivise each business unit to take responsibility for its own carbon. Microsoft is also introducing a monitoring platform to collect data on energy use and air travel for its 90,000 employees across its operations worldwide.
