Canadian oil company Cenovus Energy achieved one of the oil sands industry’s most energy-efficient production ratings in its first year of independent operation, and cut the frequency of recordable accidents by 15%, according to its 2010 CSR report. It also spent $135m on supplies and services from Aboriginal-owned and joint-venture businesses. Formed in 2009, Cenovus uses a ‘next generation’ process called steam-assisted gravity drainage to extract oil. The company achieved a ratio of 2.2, representing the number of barrels of water converted into steam to produce one barrel of oil, against a previous industry best of 2.5.
