Guidance on how to produce biofuels has been produced by WWF, Conservation International and the consultancy Ecofys. The advice says biofuels have to be produced sustainably without ‘unwanted direct or indirect land use change’. It calls on companies that are moving into biofuels to pursue energy crop production only on ‘unused land’ with low biodiversity and low carbon stocks, to expand production through yield increases on existing plantations, or through the integration of energy and food crops on the same land.
