A consultancy claims to have proof that improved reputation directly increases consumer spending on a company’s products and services.

APCO Worldwide says its retail survey shows that for every point a company rises on APCO’s new Return on Reputation Indicator, it can expect to attract extra average annual spending by consumers of $133 (£85, €103).

The consultancy says the research, based on responses from nearly 10,000 people, suggested that retail companies’ market capitalisation rises 0.4 per cent for every point in increased reputation.APCO Insight now intends to use the Return on Reputation Indicator to survey other industries.
