An international human rights impact assessment programme is to be set up by the landscaping materials company Marshalls.
UK-based Marshalls, which manufactures paving, walling and other large-scale landscape features, has begun the four-year programme across its international operations after deciding the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), to which it is still a signatory, did not satisfy its needs.
After researching labour issues in India, Marshalls has said it needs to expand its knowledge in the area. This year it will focus on quarries in Rajasthan. Next year the programme will be extended to manufacturers in China, followed by assessments of smaller suppliers in other countries.
Marshalls will implement procedures set out in the Guide to human rights impact assessment and management developed by the International Business Leaders’ Forum, the UNGC and the International Finance Corporation.
This year the company is also producing a human rights guidance document for all employees.
