One of Europe’s largest food brands has set out a five-year sustainability plan in partnership with a group of NGOs.
The Birds Eye Forever Food project lists targets on sourcing, packaging and emissions to be met between 2010 and 2020 in a plan covering all raw materials and manufacturing sites, plus third-party suppliers.
The frozen food group developed the plan with charities and certifiers, including the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), the Marine Stewardship Council and the Prince’s Countryside Fund.
Commitments include a zero-landfill pledge on waste by 2015, a 15 per cent packaging reduction and 100 per cent sourcing of wild and farmed fish from certified fisheries by 2012.
David Nussbaum, chief executive of WWF-UK, said: ‘The Forever Food programme is a welcome expansion of [Birds Eye’s] aims and we very much support its ambition to become a leading initiative driving change for sustainability in supply chains and in consumer behaviour. We have a mature and constructive relationship with Birds Eye.’
