Marks & Spencer is set to become the UK’s first retailer to sell Fairtrade vegetables, following the conclusion of a two-year negotiation with the Fairtrade certification scheme.
Green beans from Kenya will go on sale in M&S stores as part of the company’s Plan A strategy, which pledged to sell more fair trade goods. Sainsburys, however, says it is also due to offer Fairtrade green beans in the near future. M&S says other varieties of beans and fresh peas will follow.
Sales of Fairtrade products at M&S increased 40 per cent last year, compared to a rise of 12 per cent in UK sales generally.
