Puma has set out targets to cut carbon emissions, energy, water and waste by a quarter over the next five years via a packaging and distribution overhaul.
By reducing the use of traditional product packaging such as shoe-boxes and polyethylene bags, manufacturing products according to best practice and improving logistical efficiency the apparel giant hopes to cut its environmental impact by a level unseen in its sector.
In addition to cutting packaging, the firm plans to introduce initiatives that will cut waste and energy use, including ‘paperless offices’ and a pledge to manufacture half of its products in accordance with best practice guidelines that specify sustainable materials and environmentally-friendly production processes.
Puma has been collecting key performance indicators from offices and stores worldwide for the past five years, identifying the areas that need to be dealt with in order to reduce its environmental footprint. It has an external advisory board to advise on the programme.
