The English Football League has teamed up with the Prince’s Trust and the Environment Agency to highlight the environmental and community work being undertaken by clubs, and to encourage sustainability across its leagues.

The Football League, which encompasses the 72 English league clubs outside the Premier League, has joined the Mayday Network, an arm of the Prince’s Trust which locally promotes sustainability in partnership with its 3000 members. Clubs signing up to the national network will make a commitment to reducing their carbon footprint and report on their sustainability performance, and are due to showcase their sustainability activities at home matches throughout May.

The information gathered from clubs will be analysed by the Environment Agency and Business in the Community, with a view to launching a best practice blueprint for the sector in September.

Philip Green, chair of the Prince of Wales’ Mayday Network, said the teams’ connection with fans and local communities would be ‘the perfect vehicle by which to spread the key message of sustainability to the public’. The Football League is one of the best-attended sports competitions in the world, with an average attendance of 10,000 per match.
