The French media, utilities and communications group Vivendi has published its first ‘greenhouse gas account’ outlining its total emissions to the atmosphere.

The account presents statistics from the 28 subsidiaries in the Vivendi group, and establishes a benchmark from which it will measure future performance.

Figures were calculated in accordance with guidelines published by the UK government last year. The guidelines suggest ways of measuring greenhouse gas output. A number of other companies, including RMC, Severn Trent and Wessex Water have adopted them.

Vivendi spokesman Jean Claude Banon said that compiling of the greenhouse gas account had been ‘a worthwhile challenge’ that had ‘put us firmly on the road’ to reducing the amount of carbon dioxide gases produced by the group.

He said that companies within the group would make new efforts to improve energy efficiency. ‘In some cases, these improvements will be achieved in partnership with suppliers and customers’, he added.
