US business have rallied to pledge relief to Haiti following the earthquake in the country that has killed tens of thousands of people.
A number of firms have donated money and resources to charities and relief services working in the region after an earthquake measuring seven on the Richter scale struck just outside the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince.
Logistics firm UPS has pledged $1million, half in cash, to be shared among The Red Cross, UNICEF and CARE. The firm will also provide support services to help relief efforts, and says it is ‘positioned to respond quickly to the urgent needs and tremendous suffering’.
Wal-Mart has donated $500,000 in cash to the Red Cross following the disaster, and is also sending $100,000-worth of pre-packaged food kits to Haiti.
The Kraft Foods Foundation has donated $25,000 to the Red Cross, while financial services firm Western Union has given $90,000 to the UN World Food Programme to help in the area.
The US-based Spirit Airlines, meanwhile, has offered free flights to Haiti for relief volunteers, only requiring that passengers donate $5 to a charity working in the region.
Although only 600 miles away from the US mainland, Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere, with 80 per cent of its ten million inhabitants thought to be living below the poverty line. The Red Cross says up to three million people have been affected by the earthquake.
