United Biscuits, the UK manufacturer of brands such as McVitie’s, Jaffa Cakes and Penguin, has pledged to procure two-thirds of its palm oil from certified sustainable sources by the middle of next year.
The target is part of a plan to source 100 per cent of its palm oil from certified farms by the end of 2011. The company, which was taken over by a private equity consortium in 2006, is working with WWF and New Britain Palm Oil to buy oil separated throughout the supply chain to ensure it all has come from sustainable plantations.
WWF has also been working with two Scottish biscuit companies, shortbread maker Walkers and oatcake manufacturer Nairn’s. The two were among the best performers in WWF’s first ever assessment of European brands on the sustainable sourcing of palm oil.
Despite their relatively small size, WWF said the two are rare examples of ‘positive action on palm oil’ and serve to show bigger companies, which collectively fail to live up to their commitments, ‘how it’s done’.
