The Singapore government has called on companies to implement CSR strategies as a way of strengthening the country’s economy.
Labour minister Gan Kim Yong said at Singapore’s inaugural International CSR Summit: ‘Singapore adopts a practical approach to CSR, and believes that economic and social progress should go hand in hand. In our pursuit of economic growth, we have also not forgotten to strengthen our social capital, which is what makes a nation strong and resilient.’
The announcement marks the first time the Singapore government has publicly endorsed corporate responsibility.
A survey conducted by the government’s ministry for trade and industry in 2008 showed that just three in ten companies were aware of and practising CSR in Singapore.
