Indian coffee farms will be among Nestlé suppliers to be certified to Rainforest Alliance standards under a newly introduced sustainability system.
Nestlé Nespresso has set up Ecolaboration, a policy that it hopes will significantly enhance its sustainability performance by 2013.
The company aims to source 80 per cent of its coffee from Rainforest Alliance-certified farms through its own sustainability programme, to triple its capacity to recycle used capsules to 75 per cent, and to reduce by 20 per cent the overall carbon emissions involved in producing every cup of Nespresso coffee.
Richard Girardot, Nestlé Nespresso’s chief executive, said: ‘Ecolaboration will bring very significant environmental, social and economic benefits to Nespresso, our consumers, and especially our many thousands of coffee-growing partners in central America, Africa and soon India.’
Tensie Whelan, the Rainforest Alliance president, said: ‘The Ecolaboration commitment means that we will work with as many as 80,000 farmers in nine countries, guiding them to meet high standards for environmental, economic and social performance.’
