Business in Nepal, particularly small enterprises, will need significant help to support inclusive recruitment, delegates decided at a recent roundtable debate in Kathmandu.
Inclusion, they observed, will never be tackled by larger companies without better labour laws, as business feels too vulnerable to reach out to wider communities. This reflects survey findings that 78 per cent of the participating businesses recruit through ‘social contacts’.
Delegates believed a greater awareness of the connection between business and societal needs was needed.
The roundtable was organized by International Alert, a UK-based conflict resolution consultancy, in partnership with Interdisciplinary Analysts, on the subject of the role of business in promoting equitable economic growth for peace. It brought together business leaders, donor community representatives and civil society.
International Alert aims to support the promotion of business as a driver for equitable economic growth in Nepal as part of its programme Equitable Economic Recovery for Peace.
