Dole and Freeport expand scholarship programme

The Dole Food Company in the Philippines and PT Freeport Indonesia have formed partnerships with the US Department of State to expand the department’s English Access Microscholarship Programme, under which scholarships are funded for young people to study English.

The programme has provided scholarships for English language training to 44,000 students in more than 55 countries since its introduction in 2004.
Because English is considered critical to economic opportunity and career progress, the programme targets disadvantaged teenagers from under-served communities with the aim of fostering their skills, self-esteem and leadership abilities.

At the same time, multinational companies realize they can benefit from workforce development, including language training, in a competitive global marketplace.
