Alain Belda, chairman of the aluminium company Alcoa, has been given an environmental award by the Asia Society, the US institution dedicated to educating Americans about Asia and fostering understanding between them and the people of Asian countries.
He was honoured for his environmental leadership, including his part in Alcoa’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and tackle global warming.
Alcoa is a founding member of the US Climate Action Partnership, which is seeking mandatory climate change legislation, and of the Carbon Disclosure Project; and is a founding reporter of the Climate Registry.
The company has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 33 per cent since 1990, while increasing aluminium production. It invests in new technologies, such as ground-breaking carbon capture, which locks up carbon dioxide that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.
Belda was recognized as an environmental leader along with Rajendra Kumar Pachauri, director-general of the Energy and Resources Institute and chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; and Shi Zhengrong, chairman and chief executive of Suntech Power Holdings.
