A supply chain management website has made finding corporate sponsorship easier for non-governmental organizations that are working with victims of this year’s Bihar floods in northern India.
The Corporate Disaster Resource Network, which connects companies directly with NGOs, was officially set up in November after India’s National Disaster Management Authority highlighted the need for an aid information system, citing such instances as the Bihar floods and the 2004 tsunami.
The network was established by the authority with the non-profit body CSO and Aidmatrix, another non-profit organization, which creates and operates technology hubs to support stakeholder groups. Aidmatrix had already linked the US disaster agency with corporates after hurricanes Katrina and Gustavo.
The network’s database is now being used by 64 NGOs and a number of corporates across India.
Kuldeep Nar, managing director of Aidmatrix India, said: ‘We have seen potential donors come online and check the needs. Large steel companies from India have donated steel sheets for temporary shelters. Since there are no brokers involved, the companies can directly interact with the NGOs, and decide whom to work with and in what capacity.
‘We will now approach different federations, individual companies, state governments and other stakeholders for partnerships.’
