Representatives from Standard Chartered Bank and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAids) in Bangladesh have signed an agreement to create a business coalition on HIV/AIDS in the country.
The coalition aims to encourage businesses and other institutions in Bangladesh to ‘create an environment that promotes an effective response to the disease’. UNAids is an inter-agency project providing information and support services in the fight against Aids.
Dan Odallo, line director of Bangladesh's National Aids Programme and the UNAids co-ordinator in the country, said the coalition will be the first of its kind in the country and will ‘generate broader engagement from the business community’ to fight HIV/Aids.
Osman Morad, Standard Chartered Bangladesh's chief executive, said the fight against HIV/Aids was commercially important to the bank ‘because the health and wellbeing of our people and customers is vital for sustainable economic growth’.
