Anglo American is extending its HIV and Aids drugs programme in South Africa to family members of its 75,000 workers there.
Brian Brink, Anglo’s medical senior vice-president in South Africa, said the mining group realized that confining treatment to the workplace would have only limited results. ‘We can’t just treat half the problem’, he said.
The company said it was still seeing new infections among employees, despite workplace treatment, and this was partly because family members lacked medical attention.
