An Australian subsidiary of the vehicle maker GM is partnering the World Environment Center to make its supply chain more sustainable.

So far 17 of GM Holden’s suppliers have joined the Greening the Supply Chain programme to improve their environmental performance. The programme is similar to other GM projects in China, Brazil, Mexico and Romania.

GM Holden has already installed an energy monitoring system at its Fisherman's Bend works near Melbourne to improve efficiency in its furnaces and compressed air distribution plants. It also reduced water consumption per engine produced by 38 per cent between 2002 and 2007.

Its aim is zero waste at its manufacturing plants so that nothing is sent to landfill.
