A campaign has been started in Pakistan to create an awareness of the social responsibilities of oil and gas companies accused of damaging communities.
The campaign has resulted from a CSR workshop run by the Participatory Development Initiatives consultancy and Oxfam GB, at which elected representatives and activists were told that the oil and gas companies had degraded the environment and deprived local communities of royalty and community development in the country’s Badin district.
Various companies have been accused of failing to invest in the development of the district even though they are duty-bound by the government to spend at least one per cent of income on community projects. Other accusations are that outsiders are being given jobs in contravention of an agreement with the authorities, and that the companies have created environmental and health hazards by using poisonous chemicals.
