Preferential interest rates are being offered by a Japanese bank to customers who can show they are reducing the carbon dioxide emissions for which they are responsible.
Customers of the Biwako Bank pledge to take action to observe certain principles listed on a government website and then receive a printed declaration of their carbon dioxide reductions. Those who show a reduction target of a kilogram a day receive an interest rate of 0.2 percentage points above the rates for the bank’s Super Time Deposit and Super Time Deposit 300 accounts.
The bank’s move is in response to a government-led campaign to cut daily carbon dioxide emissions by one kilogram per individual.
