BT has won the top accolade at the UK Awards for Sustainability Reporting.

Among the reasons for the telecoms company's victory were its efforts to outline the business case for CSR, a detailed statement from its stakeholder panel, and the description of how it selects topics to cover.

Unilever was runner-up and four organizations were commended - among them last year's winner Vodafone for its disclosures on public policy, lobbying and taxation, and BP for its approach to assurance.

BHP Billiton won praise for its online reporting, with Centrica the runner up in this category.

The awards are organized annually by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. All reports were also analysed by the Tomorrow's Company think-tank, which looked for evidence that companies are altering their governance structures to take account of sustainability strategies.

Tomorrow's Company director Mark Goyder said that in only seven of the 76 reports submitted had he found any suggestion that companies 'really pulled together strategy and governance in an integrated way'.
