The world’s largest toy company, Mattel, has created an internal ‘corporate responsibility organization’ with sweeping powers as part of its response to a series of damaging product recalls.
The department will combine units that until now have separately covered product quality, labour standards, sustainability, government relations and public reporting. It will be headed by one of the company’s most senior executives, Geoff Massingberd, who has moved from his position as head of Canadian operations to become senior vice president of the new department.
Mattel chief executive Robert Eckert said this was a direct response to the recall of more than 20 million Chinese-made Mattel toys since the summer due to the presence of impermissible traces of lead paint and tiny magnets that small children might swallow.
He said the recalls have been a big blow to Mattel, which claims to be the only toy company to independently monitor its manufacturing facilities and was the first to produce a citizenship report.
