Philip Morris, one of the world’s largest tobacco companies, has been shortlisted for recognition for its educational work in the Philippines.
The company is in line for the International Community Service Award, one of the 2007 Corporate Citizenship awards handed out by the Business Civic Leadership Center, part of the United States Chamber of Commerce.
An education project providing text books and technology has qualified Philip Morris Philippines Manufacturing for the shortlist.
Altogether Philip Morris has donated maths and science textbooks to 74 schools and has provided 16 state schools with the Knowledge Channel, which televizes lessons based on the education ministry’s curriculum.
The company’s efforts in supporting public education in the Philippines appear to have improved school results. The project has produced a 25 per cent increase in retention and comprehension of lessons on the television channel by students and a 14 per cent improvement in academic performance.
The scheme is the company’s response to Goal 2-Achieve Universal Primary Education, the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals programme for poverty alleviation.
