Transport group National Express has abandoned trials of biofuels in bus engines because of fears about the social and environmental consequences. The group said there was ‘considerable concern’ that biofuel production, from crops such as sugar cane and rapeseed, can destroy natural habitats and raise food production costs in developing countries.
