The Mitsui Trust Financial Group has become the first Japanese private company to win permission from the country’s financial regulatory body to accept carbon emission credits in trust.

Mitsui intends now to offer sub-divided trust beneficiary interests to companies that want carbon emission credits in smaller amounts. Mitsui will also be able to assist other Japanese companies in cutting the administrative burden of holding and assigning carbon emission credits, subdividing the credits and assigning them, using the credits as collateral and providing simultaneous delivery of credits against payment.
