A pilot project is to be started in Shenzhen with the aim of bringing
employees into a campaign to improve social and environmental
conditions in China’s information and communications technology
industry.
The project was unveiled at a conference that considered a report drawn up by a group including FIAS, the World Bank Group’s investment climate advisory service, and Business for Social Responsibility.
Annemarie Meisling, FIAS private sector development specialist, said: ‘Achieving sustainable labour and environmental practices in global supply chains requires an enabling environment that is supported by the government. Hence we encourage local government to participate in the pilot project through a public-private partnership to ensure a long-term sustainable solution.’
The report emphasizes that industry needs government backing to monitor supply chains in China.
