Ernst & Young is to expand its in-house corporate responsibility programme in the UK by creating a new full-time post within each of its four UK business units.
The new recruits will work directly with staff in the consultancy’s financial services practice, the industrial, commercial and government practice, the national growth markets unit, and the core business services arm. The appointments are additional to its existing three-strong corporate responsibility team.
Nicky Major, Ernst & Young’s corporate responsibility director, said the expansion would spread CSR throughout E&Y’s UK operation and encourage its 9500 staff to become more involved.
‘We’ve had a centralized corporate responsibility team for about four years, so this is about making sure we’ve got people close to the ground who really understand how each of the businesses works,’ she told EP.
‘We feel we have the right processes and structures in place, but now it’s about helping individuals to take the action they need. So, for instance, we have recycling facilities up and running, and now it’s about encouraging people to use them more.’ She said the four new managers would concentrate on community involvement and the environment. Working within the units would make it easier for them to tackle issues such as individuals’ travel patterns, homeworking, and changing work schedules to make volunteering easier.
They will be expected to support senior management ‘in actively engaging with the community and making positive environmental change’, and will also work on the consultancy’s reporting of such matters.
