Foreign companies operating in Taiwan score only marginally better when
it comes to CSR than local ones, according to a new survey.
The study by the Chinese-language Taiwan magazine Global Views Monthly gave an average score for foreign companies in Taiwan of 66 out of 100 based on performance across a range of CSR issues – only slightly better than the average of 62 for local businesses.
However, the survey did show that foreign companies were far more likely to produce an annual CSR report, with 64 per cent of them doing so against only 28 per cent of local businesses.
The most pressing issue for both local and foreign companies was the need for better dialogue with employees, which was cited by 71 per cent of the former and 85 per cent of the latter as a priority.
The survey looked at 20 criteria based on the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and judged companies on issues such as transparency, environmental policies, fair competition, labour relations and workers’ welfare, and communication with stakeholders.
