The winner of the 2006 Asian CSR Award in the support and improvement
of education category was Globe Telecom (Philippines). The award was
for its Text2Teach project conducted in co-operation with the Ayala
Foundation, Chikka Asia, the Department of Education, the International
Youth Foundation, Nokia, the Pearson Foundation, PMSI Dream Cable,
SEAMEO Innotech and UNDP.
Merit awards in this category went to the Coca-Cola Foundation (Philippines), GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare (India) and Unilever Pakistan.
The environmental excellence award was won by 3M (Asia Pacific). Unilever Philippines took a merit award.
In the poverty alleviation category Pier One Seaman’s Dormitory (Philippines) won the top award. Ballarpur Industries (India) and Coca-Cola (Hong Kong) took merits.
For best workplace practices Manila Water (Philippines) had the top award. Merits went to Chowking Foods and IBM (both Philippines).
The concern for health category was won by Engro Chemicals Pakistan. The merits were taken by Coca-Cola (Hong Kong), Jollibee Foods (Philippines) and Thai Life Insurance.
A lifetime achievement award went to Senator Mechai Viravaidya, chairman of Thailand’s Population and Community Development Association.
Wild Asia, a Malaysia-based conservation think tank, has announced
the winners of its 2006 Responsible Tourism Awards, which recognize
operators in Asia, from luxury resorts to small or community-based
eco-ventures, that show a high degree of commitment to respecting local
cultures, benefiting local economies and achieving low environmental
impacts. The Responsible Tourism Award (Best in Asia) went to Evason
Phuket (Thailand), Alila Manggis (Bali, Indonesia), Alila Ubud (Bali),
and Nanga Sumpa Lodge (Batang Ai, Sarawak, Malaysia). The Responsible
Tourism Award (Best in Langkawi, Malaysia) went to Tanjung Rhu Resort.
