British Airways is to produce its first social report in July.

The document will be combined with BA’s ninth environment report and should be published to coincide with its annual report and annual meeting.

Melanie Newman, general manager of market research at BA, stressed the document – still in draft form – would be a ‘first step’. It would be based around a revised code of conduct that has been sent out for consultation with stakeholders.

‘We want it to reach the standard of our environment report and to make sure it’s meaningful as opposed to being just a document,’ she said. ‘But saying that is one thing and doing it is another.’

The report would include some measurements of social performance, show examples of good practice and set targets in various areas, Newman added.

BA has drawn mainly on previously commissioned polls and research to provide information for the document, but has supported this with feedback from specially convened focus groups. They will be shown a final draft version for comment before it is signed off.
