Water is to be laid on within three years by Brandix Lanka, Sri Lanka’s largest apparel exporter, to villages where its workers live.

Brandix surveyed its 18,000 employees and found 900 were without pure drinking water. The project will benefit all the people in the villages where the water will be provided, not only Brandix employees.

The company chose water as the main theme of its CSR activities because the apparel industry is water-intensive and Sri Lanka suffers from severe shortages – only 32 per cent of the population has pipe-borne water.

Because contaminated water causes many diseases, the company is also setting up a training and research centre with the Gap clothing company to educate communities on the health hazards.

In an earlier project with Gap the company provided a desalination plant that now brings water to 450 families at a monthly cost of $2.50 (£1.30), instead of the $40 spent on buying water from private suppliers.
