Female CSR specialists in the US earn $30,000 (£16,000) a year less than their male counterparts, new statistics show.
Women can expect to earn between $80,000 and $90,000 on average, compared with the $110,000-$120,000 paid to men. A survey of 254 US-based CSR professionals found that the average salary overall was $90,000-$100,000.
Among US executives with a more specialized community involvement brief, the average male salary was lower at $90,000- $100,000, but women still earned less ($60,000-$70,000).
Almost half of CSR executives said their salaries were higher than, or the same as, those of others working at a similar level in other departments. A fifth said their salary was lower, while the rest did not know.
CSR posts in the chemicals and pharmaceuticals sector had the highest average salaries, while those in gas and electricity earned the lowest.
The statistics were collected by the Corporate Citizenship Center at Boston College.
The figures suggest that in the US, the gender pay gap in CSR and community involvement roles is about the same size as it is for other occupations.
Women's salaries are typically 76 per cent those of men, according to 2001 figures from US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
