A senior trade unionist has called for an all-round labour contract system, which is being considered by the Chinese government, to be introduced without delay.

Such a system would establish legal standards in labour relations, said Wang Zhaoguo, vice-chairman of the standing committee of the National People's Congress and president of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions.

Wang said in a teleconference on labour contract reform that the system would be part of the effort to create fair, balanced and harmonious labour relations.

The legislature is examining China's labour contract law and the government intends to bring in an all-round system by 2008, by which time most businesses in the country should have signed labour contracts with their employees. Labour contracts covering salaries and welfare have been signed by many Chinese workers since the market economy replaced the cradle-to-grave government welfare system.
