Attempts are being made to stamp out corruption by businesses trying to bribe their way into China's military procurement. Companies are being accused of corrupt methods of selling military equipment, medical supplies and telecommunications and transport goods to the army.
This follows the army's policy introduced several years ago of opening some procurement spending to commercial tenders in an effort to improve efficiency. The army is now conducting a campaign to eliminate bribery and corruption by private enterprise. The government is also investigating about 1000 senior military officers to find evidence of corruption.
The action by the army comes shortly after President Hu Jintao warned that corruption was eroding the Communist Party's reputation. Earlier the navy deputy commander Wang Shouye was denounced by a mistress for economic misdeeds and was sacked.
Jintao said: 'In commercial transactions the military confronts the temptations and corruptions of commercial bribery, and cases of economic law-breaking and abuses have been on the rise.'
