The Japanese post office network, which handles trillions of yen of ordinary investors’ savings, has started selling an ethical fund. The Sumitomo Trust’s SRI Fund is one of more than 30 socially responsible investment products to have been introduced to the retail market since the first one in 1999.

The net asset value of SRI vehicles domiciled in Japan, including eco-friendly funds, has reached 250billion yen ($2.15bn, £1.13bn).
