British building societies have dramatically increased their CSR activity over the past three years, a study has shown.

A review of the corporate responsibility programmes of 42 of the UK’s 62 societies found that they are now taking a much more formalized approach.

Two-thirds now support employees’ charitable commitments through volunteering or fundraising, compared with a third when a similar survey was conducted in 2002. A quarter have a written policy on managing environmental impacts, against two per cent in 2002.

The research was carried out by The Smart Company consultancy on behalf of the Building Societies Association. Of the 42 societies covered by the survey, ten were large (with assets of more than £5billion), 16 were medium-sized (£500million-£5bn), and the rest were small (up to £500m).

Building societies in the UK employ over 46,000 people.

The Chelsea Building Society has released its first corporate social responsibility report. The society has assets of £10bn.
