Chemicals multinational ICI has laid out a five-year sustainability plan to run until 2010.

The Sustainability Challenge, agreed by ICI’s board, sets dozens of objectives, including targets to reduce work-related injury and sickness levels by 20 per cent, a commitment to begin measuring and reporting on gender and diversity in management positions, and ten per cent cuts in water use and hazardous waste production.

ICI, which will report annually on its progress, has drawn up the targets to replace those set in a five-year challenge that ended last year. The group met almost all its objectives under that challenge, but failed to meet a commitment to measure energy use in offices and transport.

Another area in which ICI struggled was ‘distribution incidents’, such as spillages, which doubled during the five years despite a target to cut them by half. ICI said this had been caused by a change in transport legislation in North America.

ICI has instituted four sustainability programmes, each lasting five years, since 1991.
