Global sales of Fairtrade products rose by a third to £758million ($1.46billion) in 2005, according to the Fairtrade Foundation, which said the increase was largely due to major retailers allocating more shelf space.

Britain was the biggest market for Fairtrade goods, accounting for £195m of the total, a 40 per cent rise on 2004.
