Alcoholic drinks producers in Asia are meeting to decide how best to self-regulate their advertising and marketing in a responsible fashion.

Dr Marcus Grant, president of the International Center for Alcohol Policies, said: 'The leading alcohol companies have established marketing codes to support responsible advertising and are keen to work with other stakeholders to ensure that industry advertising and marketing meet the highest standards with clarity and consistency.'

Last month a workshop was held in Tokyo with sponsorship from the Brewers' Association of Japan and the Japanese Spirits and Liquor Makers' Association. Senior executives from the Japanese drinks companies Asahi, Kirin, Orion, Sapporo and Suntory were among supporters of the event.

The workshop was also attended by representatives of governments, the drinks industry, trade associations, public health bodies and non-governmental organizations from Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand.

The aims of the workshop were to review best practice, to encourage an exchange of information on self-regulatory systems, especially where they do not exist, and to build up partnerships between organizations.
